Aston Villa are on the verge of completing a £17 million transfer for Atletico Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri, sparing fans from another week of breathless “mystery defender” speculation.
The 24-year-old Italian has already landed in Birmingham to undergo a medical and is expected to sign within the next 48 hours. He will become manager Unai Emery’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window.
Ruggeri, who made 47 appearances for Atletico last season following a move from Atalanta, is slated to fill the squad vacancy left by Lucas Digne after his departure to Paris Saint-Germain. Villa originally attempted to secure AC Milan’s Pervis Estupinan last month, but pivoted to Ruggeri after those talks stalled.
Villa’s transfer window shopping appears far from complete. Emery is reportedly still seeking a right-back, targeting West Ham’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka (valued at around £25 million), while negotiations continue with Bayern Munich over midfielder Joao Palhinha.
