In the fast-moving world of professional mixed martial arts, losing a fight usually warrants a few months of soul-searching and technical adjustments. Bantamweight fighter Lewis McGrillen has instead decided that 20 days and a quick flight to North Carolina are plenty of time to solve his problems.
The 25-year-old Mancunian was submitted via second-round rear-naked choke by big underdog Rafael do Nascimento at PFL Austin on July 18. Do Nascimento was a late replacement after McGrillen’s original opponent, Sergio Pettis, withdrew with an injury. Having not stepped into the cage for 14 months prior to the bout, McGrillen chalked the defeat up to “cobwebs” and getting overly excited rather than a systemic issue.
Rather than taking a prolonged rest to ponder the sport’s “game of inches,” McGrillen went straight from the airport back to the gym—jetlag intact—to work on a self-described list of fixes. He now faces American Brandon Lewis at PFL Charlotte this Friday, placed second on the main card.
The rest of the event is headlined by a middleweight clash between Bryan Battle and Dalton Rosta, with light heavyweights Simeon Powell and Dovlet Yagshimuradov featured in the co-main event.
