In a thrilling development for Chicago commuters who enjoy narrow highway lanes, the Illinois Department of Transportation has reopened one lane of the inbound Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90) ramp to Lawrence Avenue just in time for the Friday evening rush.
The entire ramp was shut down after a section of its retaining wall failed on Saturday, August 1. Temporary repairs began a few days later, allowing officials to restore traffic flow to the right lane, which is currently restricted to a width of 10 feet, 6 inches.
Engineers are performing a more in-depth assessment to decide whether the retaining wall requires partial or complete replacement. IDOT advises drivers to expect continued delays, allow extra travel time, and exercise caution around road crews while permanent plans are finalized.
